Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Nice data point......but.....

This post in not intended to be criticism of our OP's conclusions; rather it a matter of how much credence do I place on the results he has so kindly shared with us:

I'd suggest that if I could find a Cit 12 and Marantz 140, I might have a different set of conclusions - even if I was using the same speakers as our OP did.

I believe the reason behind this would be how the aging of the components took place. For instance, if my Marantz 140 had been kept in a cool, temperature-stable area for its entire life, I suspect it would have survived better than a Cit 12 that had been left out in the garage in a hot, swampy, and humid area of North Carolina. In other words, how they were allowed to age would be a factor in the resulting listening tests carried out on 35+ year old gear.

Since we don't know the background on either of the 2 amps our OP used, I'd suggest the only real way to know how different they are is to rebuild them with new components, ensure they meet the original specs for performance and then sit down and listen to them again.

I do note, however, that our OP/reviewer indicated multiple times that there were only slight differences between the 2 amps. I wonder how much different things might be if they were both up to spec again?

Cheers,

David
