A linear regulator is essentially an amplifier which can have bandwidth beyond the audio range. A switching supply can respond no faster than several clocks (at 20-50KHz). Practical linear supplies are much faster.

Also, the switching supply may have a smaller transformer, but both linear and switching supplies must first filter the 60Hz AC. The filter capacitor charge requirements (Q=C*V) are similar for both.

It is extraordinarily difficult to keep digital switching noise from coupling into sensitive analog circuits. The best approach is to avoid generating switching noise. The linear supply's only switching is in the 60Hz diode bridge.
