Steve Eddy kindly provided me with the schematic. The 8k resistor is to fake out the linear pot to behave like an audio taper. Here are his commentsWhen you wire them between the wiper and ground, you'll get a logarithmic taper. The reason it's a plus is that linear pots have much better tracking than log/audio taper pots and when combined with the 8k resistor, gives you a log pot with excellent tracking.
