Just based on the model designations you provided, it seems that the use of the potentiometer at the input came later than the use of the single value resistance (50E vs 50D). Have you used the 50E amplifier in your home system, and when you did, what setting on the pot sounded best? I ask because for some preamplifiers, especially for a tube based preamplifier, a fixed input impedance of 10K ohms might be problematic. On the other hand, getting rid of the pot per se may improve SQ.
