The best phase shift is no phase shift, or at least one pushed out of the audible range, especially when it's easy to do. Humans might not be sensitive to a single phase shift. I agree with Toole, and I can't hear it myself. But can multiple, cascading (source, pre, power) phase shifts possibly be good for amplitude response and group delay? Those are certainly audible. Some are unavoidable. Why not eliminate as many of the easy ones as possible from the pass band? One cannot avoid phase shifts of crossovers, drivers, and enclosures, but it's not very difficult to get them out of the audible range of input or output filters, and every equipment designer on the planet strives for it.
