RE: Substitute a Switching Wall Wart with a Linear Wall Wart?

Since this is a DIY thread, another path to consider is buying a linear "brick" power supply module like those made by "Power One". These have been produced by the millions for the machine tool industry. They come complete on an "L" shaped extrusion with a multi-voltage input transformer (taps from 100 to 240VAC; 50/60 Hz) transformer, all the regulating components and studs to connect the output. Their single output HA thru HE units can be obtained with output voltages ranging from 2VDC to 28VDC, and currents from under an amp to 18 amps. Their dual output HAA units can supply +_ voltages from 15 to 24VDC. NOW, to use them you have to put them in a box that includes the input /output cable assembly and /or connectors; a fuse and (if you want) an on-off switch. Observe correct safety requirements.

Best of all is that they can be obtained used for pennies on the dollar on places like the Bay.

I've used many dozens of these on various projects with many different voltage/current configurations. Regulation specs are very good - based on the LM/MC723 VR chip with output buffering depending on current requirements.
