Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ.

I'm not sure why you care, but okay

Based on my own experience in constructing and testing, which is considerable, these are the things I can hear but can't explain.

Break-in. Cannot be measured, therefore does not exist to anyone who relies only on measurements. Yet it does exist and is very real to anyone who listens carefully.

Skin effect. Experts with their formulas tell us it is not a factor at audio frequencies. Bullshit.

Film capacitor voices. If they measure the same, they sound the same. No, they don't.

Power cords, outlets, etc. How can the last three feet blah blah blah. I've seen that stupid argument so many times. "Educated" people can be very comfortable with their ignorance.

Magnetism. I cannot say with certainty that magnetism is the operative factor, but non-magnetic resistors sound better to me than ones that are magnetic.

I have difficulty accepting some of the others, but I don't close my mind completely to any of it: wire and component directionality (It exists, but only temporarily and might actually be a component of break-in!), crystal effects, bizarre circuitry and grounding schemes, exotic outlet covers, some of the other stuff that gets posted here. I ignore the ones that I believe don't matter. People believe what they want to believe, and they'll buy what they want to buy. They might even come here and tell others about it. Let them do it. It harms no one.

I do not believe in audio magic, but I believe there are aspects of sound we do not yet know how to measure. These elements of sound are affected by physical principles, but we don't know all of those things yet. There is a limit to how far all this can go, but I think it's entirely up to the individual as to where that limit gets established.

Peace,
Tom E
