It's terrible, Ivan, to use his name pejoratively

Please stop doing that.

Sorry I blew up. It's frustrating to read posts by guys claiming they have carefully selected and tweaked the best gear, but then they say nothing at all about that gear or the tweaks. What a bunch of teasers!

I think you and I do have similar approaches to much of this. I also disagree with Duster's initial sentence in the post above. It's ridiculous to claim that objective reasoning is against the spirit of the forum, whether it's guided by scientific evidence or Santeria rituals. People make crazy claims here all the time, but that doesn't mean rational perspectives are not allowed. Personally, I leave the truly nutso types alone rather than aggravate them. I never said one word to the crystal kooks. It's only when foolishness masquerades as authority that I like to get involved.

I missed your earlier reference to the DAC.

I admire Curl a lot. He's been at the root of many significant audio developments. Hansen is a legendary figure, but I don't know much about him other than Ayre. I know he posted in AA. Certainly they both relied on measurements and scientific evidence to create their beautiful circuits. I see Crump's name all the time, but not sure what he actually did in the industry.

I'm not crazy about opamps, especially the monolithic chips, but they do a few things well. I really like the sound of the discrete Sparkos. Fortunately, my SACD player does not contain any opamps and my preamp is passive, so the earliest opamp in my system is the active xover input, where I have the Sparkos. If I knew how, I'd change that to a simpler discrete buffer. I've searched and read and tried to understand, but I'm willing to accept that there is some technical stuff that I'll probably never learn, so try to make the best compromise I can.

My mid/tweeter monoblock amplifiers are each comprised of a couple chips, including one opamp and the LM3886 in a compound implementation. I have compared it to all kinds and price levels of commercial amplifiers, and it is nearly the best I have used. The BAT VK-120's beat it in a few areas, but not by much. In terms of efficiency, this chip amp is the best by far. (Wow, 5 "com" words there, and I didn't mean to do it.)

A generalization that feedback is evil is probably pushing it too far. I don't think it steals the soul of anything unless it's inappropriately applied.

Peace,
Tom E
