How are these drivers powered by/attached/crossed to the main system now? No doubt they affect it electronically as well as audibly.
To adjust the level, you need to use an L-pad. Most commercial products are pretty poorly made, but you could attach one temporarily to get an acceptable level and then take a measurement to use to build into a fixed unit you build yourself with high quality resistors. Or you could do some rough calculations of how many dB you need to attenuate and how much power you need to dissipate and just start fitting resistors.
You must use power resistors rated at several watts. You could start with cheap sand cast resistors (the little white or brown boxes that cost a buck each), but those don't sound great and you might get false results due to poor sonics. I would start with Mundorf MOX resistors at a minimum. They sound pretty good and they're only a couple bucks each, so you could buy a bunch and start experimenting. Read up on how L-pads work. Don't buy any fancy resistors until you get values figured out. To be honest, the Mundorf's might be all you need. That's what I use now in my passive xovers after trying lots of other types, including Caddock, Duelund, Mills, etc.
