Modding a crossover is less risky than the circuit mods you promote. Crossover parts are generally larger, more rugged, and easier for a novice to work with, and frequently not difficult to access.
A proper crossover mod such as better capacitors usually makes even a "quality" speaker such as B&W sound considerably better. I know because I've done it to DM6's and 802's. Rarely will a competent mod ruin the sound of a speaker, but if it does, the original part(s) can usually be put back in and no damage done but information gained.
Hardly "a big bucket of worms."
