elaboration

Yeah, you're correct that nobody's ears respond identically. Much to my dismay and constant frustration, my hearing is significantly imbalanced, some would even say suspect, due to running an engine lathe (left ear is always closer to the screeching cutting tool) for several years before hearing protection was fashionable. Now it's mandatory. Wimps. Real men can't hear above 6k! I also drive with the window rolled down (yes, rolled) in warm weather and notice my hearing improves over the winter months.

So I play both "old" and "new" channels simultaneously and move from one speaker to the other, listening to each one with both ears. Then I'll swap left/right inputs to make sure any difference there is accounted for. Then I'll play a mono recording, some old jazz that was decently recorded. It works much better than trying to remember what the old thing sounded like a few hours or days ago (even weeks, for some long break in cycles), all while the new thing is already playing. Temporarily not at all interested in the stereo effect because that will be degraded by definition. Usually, anything that improves FR and clarity on a single channel will result in stereo improvement, so that comes along afterward when both channels are changed or the new one is put back. Hey, sometimes that happens!

Peace,
Tom E
