I'm puzzled by your emphasis on the ground wire. It carries no signal, so what is its influence on the sound? What differences do you hear by changing only the ground wire? In all the balanced IC's I've made, I have always used a "lower" quality but larger gauge wire for the ground. I don't use manufactured cable but start with solid wire and tubing and construct my own with the spaced twisted pair geometry. I also wonder why you feel the need to shield a balanced IC. Sometimes a belt and suspenders is not the best approach. My belief has always been, if you don't need shielding, don't use it. It never adds anything.
Nice to have the Diamonds as a reference. I used AQ Anaconda, then Acoustic Zen Silver Ref, which were the best I've heard. That's what I'm trying to duplicate with DIY efforts. So far, close but not quite. I've used OCC copper and OCC silver from VH Audio. Next I'm going to try combining the two. I'll post the results.
Please keep us informed of your experiments.
