The result of building toward the goal of achieving a perfectly controlled impedance cable will land you somewhere. The only question is, where? If you use the right cable, connectors, and construction technique you might come close, maybe even within an acceptable window. I think the hardest part would be to correctly choose and source materials which really do land you near enough to the mark. I don't know of a low cost way to check the result with any kind of accuracy. It's the wild west out there with USB. I kind of hate usb.
