Excellent quality materials and quick service, including small orders. Buy a 12" bar and find a local waterjet-cutter shop to give you, say 11 square pieces 1"x 1" (allows for jet cutter kerf). The cutter might charge you some minimum fee (my guy needs $45, just to fire up the machine). The cuts will be very clean and sharp, looking good, and take about 5 minutes.
I'd choose stainless or aluminum, don't get rust on the floor.
I can't think of any ready-made pieces of steel in little squares, except something like blank "stamping tabs" - they may be kinda thin however. Look for something like these:
