Keeping in mind the complexity and uniqueness of each our systems compared to other users on the board hints why there is disagreement and uncertainty about what "works". Our systems and their environments can be drastically different from each other.
The gear to accurately and completely characterize an em environment to the level necessary in order to engineer "fixes" to perceived problems, not to mention the knowledge and experience to run it well, is too expensive for a hobbyist. The end result seems to be that the science morphs into voodoo and black art on the forums.
In the end experimentation is likely to be the most efficient route for us hobbyists. To put your mind at ease, each of the materials mentioned has it's place in the right application but at the same time can be completely worthless when misapplied. Luckily these things are affordable enough where the downside isn't huge if you by a chunk of shielding material type that happened to be the wrong choice to address the fields you are dealing with.
