This seems to be a consistent observation. I've tried the Hi Fi tuning brand (older type) with mixed results.
Did you try altering the orientation?.. the claim is that they are directional - which I find fascinating - but the blogs seem to ratify this.
I'll have to try myself with some of the higher end brands .
