In Reply to: How can I tell if it is safe to replace a electrolytic cap with a film cap in the signal path posted by airtime on August 17, 2015 at 06:03:30:
What's in there now? You can experiment with better brands of electrolytics; they all have a particular sound. Hard to predict what a particular cap will do to liven up the midrange, but any film cap will almost always sound better in every respect, including bringing the midrange to life.
If that is the input coupling cap, you can safely insert a film cap, possibly a lower value depending on the input impedance. Manufacturers frequently over spec electrolytics because small values, such as 10uF, are dirt cheap, and 'lytics usually sound better as they get bigger, and because there is a large +/- tolerance on 'lytics and the value declines as they age.
I would not attempt "bypassing" the 'lytic with a small film, as this can lead to odd resonances and smearing of mids and highs. It can be done, but requires extensive experimentation to get the right combination.
