myu,
What you want to do should certainly work. A few things to think about when using LED's to replace incandescent bulbs. First is what is referred to as the "viewing angle". LED's don't give off light in all directions, in fact some of them have very narrow viewing angles; so after you've selected the color and physical size of the device you want, I'd suggest you try to find one with as large a viewing angle as possible (120 degrees?). Then there's the brightness issue - I tend to find that I initially size the dropping resistor too small and it's WAY too bright - almost always have to increase the size of the resistor significantly to bring down its intensity - you may want to start with 1K to 2K ohms.
