Re: PLL jitter reduction and lock question for Dave I . or anyone else

Hi Mike

All the DACs I have seen do have a lock indicator on them. It is usually derived from the ERF (pin 25) on the CS8414. If not locked there will be no output from all DACs I am familiar with as the ERF signal is usually used by the digital filter also for mute. In any case, if not locked the audio output would either be muted or very noticably clicking on/off or making high pitched whining noises. In most cases it will still lock fairly quickly with up to 30 or so mfd and in play mode much higher as there are many more one/zero transitions to speed lock acquisition. On one of my past DACs I even used a low leakage 1000uF unit controlled with a relay in combination with a faster lock. Experiment and tell us where you think the diminishing returns sets in. Do you notice an improvement as you increase the value above stock?

Dave
