I've been using a variety of non-inductive or wirewound resistors from Mouser or Mills. Download the Mouser catalog and get familiar with the through hole power resistor sections. There are many choices there. Xicon, for me, are cheap resistors.

One of my current favorite is the IRC lineup like the NAS3 or the NAS5. These are 3W and 5W metal glaze resistors and the AS are wirewound. Handmade electronics is one of my favorite vendors for these.

The problem is finding all the values you need from the manufacturer's you want. Mills has very limited values but very nice stuff. I like to mix up a few different types for my "sonic seasoning". I'd never go all metal film or metal oxide. I'd look for the IRC's first, the Mills second and even the classic carbon comps are nice sounding. With that combo I feel the sound is more relaxed/warm and not as analytical.
