Re: Muting transistors CD63...just clip them out ?

Here ill explain in non technical newbie terms because I was in the same boat as you are about 5 years ago when I was modding my first cd63, I ended up killing it:) But have a new cd53 now and have done extensive mods to it and it is working great. The most important thing is to practice your soldering and desoldering as much as possible, the pcs in these players are quite delicate and its very easy to lift a trace and then you have all sorts of problems. So practice practice practice!!! Ill give you one stage of mods at a time so it doesnt get over welming. Heres the mods for the analogue section which is the most inmportant to sound quality IMO.

Analogue stage:
1. desolder muting transitors save in case u dont like the result
2. remove c659,660 also remove r655, r656 *no jumper*
3. replace c655-c658 and r657,658 with jumpers, save the caps(SILMIC)
4. c651-654, c611-614, cd15,16 replace with 470uf/16v with a good audio cap, panasonic FC, rubycon za, elna cerafine, blackgate...etc
5. replace the opamps with your favorite dual opamp AD827, opa2132...
6. replace r651-r654, r613-616 with small 1mh axial inductor+ferite bead
7. replace the folowing caps and resitors for the analogue filter, these are in the signal path so use good quality parts. I would use either silver mica or polystyrene caps and .1% dale resistors
C601...604 120p
C605/606 1000p
C607/608 100p
CD21...24 120p
R601...604 27k
R607/608 18k
R609/610 22k
R605/606/611/612 10k
RD21...28 10k

Well thats it for the analogue stage. It seems like alot, but its really not, just take your time and dont get over anxious. Do one step at a time. Most of the parts can be found at Digikey and mouser if your in the US and Farnell in the UK. When your done with all the mods you may want to experiment with disconnectiong the HDam circuit, it can open up the sound even more. But for now leave it in. SO get to work on those mods and see how u like the sound afterwards. Next we will take care of the power supply, there is lots of imporvement to be made there. After that the digital section and your pretty much done. ONe other thing you can do without a soldering iron, is to add better feet like vibrapord under the player and also damp the chassis with some blue tack to kill any vibrations. Feel free to email me at fsatsil@optonline.net and also check out the DIYAUDIO.com forum theres a huge 300+ paghe post about the cd63
