Re: box for transformers

IMHO, you could use the toroid in any box you can find. Toroids have a smaller magnetic field footprint than other transformers so interference shouldn't be an issue, especially if it already was inside a unit and didn't cause any problems.

For MC stepup, plastic boxes are nice since you don't have to worry about isolating RCA connectors from the box. Your main concern should be preventing ground loops. Signal ground should not be connected to case ground. Normally the older style mic preamps used for MC stepups (like the altec 4722 or 15095) are already contained in enclosures that provide some level of isolation (some are even mumetal). So whatever you have laying around should work. I've used both metal and plastic.
