Yes, an air tank does work, I have several customers that run the active units this way. The compressor we supply, imported from Denmark, puts out 120 psi and can sit next to your listening chair, it is that quiet.
Any compressor that puts out at least 100 psi will also work, most are very loud but even a paint brush gun air compressor will work. You can place this type of compressor far away, even down in a basement, the only other issue with one of these types of compressors is they will stay on all the time. The Jun-Air from Denmark has a back check value that allows the compressor to kick on and off as required, maybe 2-3 times a day.
I've always suggested these noisey compressors but of the over 2000 active units sold maybe 4 customers have used one of the above methods.
