Re: Is the Behringer DEQ2496 over my head?

You should have no problem using the DEQ2496 as a digital equalizer. The manual is initially intimidating only because there are so many options and sub options, many of which you will never use. It's easy to access the equalizer function, where you will use the thumbwheel to select each frequency, then to adjust the gain or null amount wanted for that frequency.

To use the equalizer effectively you will need to measure the room's peaks and nulls. You can do this using the optional mike with a long cord, or you can alternatively use a Radio Shack sound meter with a test CD. You can't do very much to ovecome a null, but the DEQX2496 is very effective at overcoming the room-related peaks that do the most harm. It's especially effective at improving the clarity of your system if you have a room peak in the 90-160hz midbass region.

The downside of the 2496 is that the internal DAC is about the quality you might expect from a mass market DVD player - not terrible, but not the quality you might hear from a high end CD player. But there's a way to get around that - some time in the future you could get an external DAC and use the digital in and out connectors, bypassing the 2496's internal AD and DA converters. Even the $175 Lite Audio DAC-AH would be an improvement. A $1K Benchmark DAC would be magnitudes better.
