hi, im using a rogers e40a tubed int amp - for some time i felt that the balance between the L and R channels was somewhat skewed. im not a technical chap - but using a voltmeter (used primarily for testing diy ic/s and the directions in the sheffield/xlo burn in and test cd and tract 5 of the same cd), i measured the R channel of the amp to be outputting .565 v and the L channel, .344v
the rogers has a balance knob-but quite strangely does not work like the balance controls ive come across thus far (the rogers is a recent acquisition and it is a pre-owned unit - so im learning quite a bit about it as the days go by), in that turning the knob all the way to one channel does not cancel the other channel out - there is still signal - with this amp, i could not, using the balance control, get as much signal into the left ch. as i could get it into the right ch. ie, there doesnt seem to be much of a difference when i turn the knob completely to the left--but when i turn it to the right completely, the effect is quite perceptible. using the voltmeter, i adjusted the balnce control so that the amp output stands at .344v for L and R channels - this was achieved by turning the balance knob to the left to a point approximately 8 o' clock. playing the sheffield test cd - there is a dramatic improvement - but this is not the norm i think as other amps ive had (all ss) did not seem to be afflicted with this problem.another issue is that prior to adjusting the channel balance, i was getting pretty bad breakup or distortion in the left speaker - when playing a cd with a solo piano trace or sheffield test cd - track 8 - demag sweep. but after adjustment, that problem seems to be vanished.
be that as it may, i think something is not quite right and i dont quite know what to think of it all - could some kind soul tell me what is going on and what i should do - is there cause for concern?? thanks.
