Re: How do you make a VERY GOOD passive pre

EdS,
I never got a chance to listen to them. My friend had them on loan from a guy he works with and he just brought them over for one night - I was tired and just didn't have the energy to plug them in. It may be possible to get them again for an audition as the guy that owns them wants to sell them along with the cables. My friend's response was not wild elation but he had just begun to set up his new (well, used actually) Apogee's and there was so much going on at once he really didn't have a chance to properly listen either. He did mention that the weight of the MIT cables (because of those magic boxes they insist on loading up their ics with) combined with the long overhang of the RCA plug/pot arrangement was trying to tip his cdp over! And reaching behind the cdp to adjust the pots was pretty tricky. There's a pot on each channel so balancing was something of a chore. He did mention that it sounded pretty sweet, but again, he wasn't over-joyed and there were too many other things happening that night for him. I'll try to get them for weekend and let you know what I think. I'm using a B&K Pro10MC pre in my system and it's nearly *always* running passive so I'll have something to compare it to.

There's a link below to the Elma website where you may find some info - I think the plug/pot combo cost the guy 250.00 (I don't know who made them) and his MIT's were about a grand so it's not a cheap setup if you go with expensive cables.

BTW - did you notice my name on your response? I do talk to myself once in awhile, but I'm really not trying to answer my own posts -:)))

Best regards
Allan
