Actually the "bang" is a flaming thud. During the cold war the US SOSUS sonar net picked up several Soviet submarines exploding from runaway hydrogen production from the subs lead/acid batteries after (it is assumed) sea water infiltration of the cells.Many people in this country are permenently blinded every year from exploding lead/acid batterys when the hydrogen is sparked. (Hmmm, battery seems dead, let me look for the model number with this Bic...)
Good luck and only use lead/acid in a vented to the outdoors space.
