I read somewhere that they clip the mains (!!). The caps that they were talking about were about 20 000 - 40 000 microfarad (I can't remember the exact size). However it was measured that they completely clipped the mains on large transients. Now this can't be too great for the rest of your components on the same circuit. I agree with Freddy in looking at the possibility of using chokes, as they draw a smooth, continuous current from the mains, not single, large spikes.Enjoy
