Hi Thorsten,
I do agree that the articles cited are worthy background reading and I will dig out the links for others. So are those designers who have crossed swords with Doug Self.
When I empty my garage I will try for a fuller list of design heroes.I used to find DS critique entertaining and lucid. It doesn't mean
that I agree with everything he says [and I have been reading WW, ETI, Elektor, JAES etc. for far too long!].
I would guess the reduction in the letters to EW nowadays is a reflection of the reduction in original thought in analogue.
I seem to read D. Selfs writing in a different manner from the
subjectivist culture of the AA. I can see a valid case for not discussing the final "voicing" of anything in audio, unless readers are going to copy that exact board design. It is no more mysterious to me why DS does not discuss final sound quality
than it is why one is not allowed DBT comparisons in the asylum! If we are to simply concentrate on his website, I should have thought that it was set up to provide "analogue power users" or "undergrad engineers" with some useful tips to help sort this crazy field of analogue variables.
Shouldn't we be thanking D. Self for the useful data on balanced
lines/distortion etc?So what is the basic gripe? That he doesn't recommend the latest op-amps in fashion?
I should have thought that his writings were based on his personal experience at the time of writing.
He does have a section on discrete design which basically says that if you can't buy a good enough op amp then make a discrete or hybrid one. Sounds like a good idea to me.I could recommend all sorts of analogue tips based on my anecdotes,
limited experiences etc. and throw around engineering maths [though not in real-time nowadays!] but how valuable is this to others?
I don't WORK in audio design so my data is from too small a
perspective to be as authorative as DS, JC and others.let's all keep it fun,
Graham
