Yep, I thought alot about both. But in the end I choose not to use either. I don't like sand because I believe it dulls the sound too much. I have a Bright Star sandbox which I used underneath my tube amp on the bottom shelf. I thought it sounded good until I removed it and just let the amp sit on the shelf. Cleaner and more detailed sound. Now the sand box sits on top of my subwoofer.
I also had a Bright Star airmass and the problem I sensed from using this device is that vibrations just didn't go anywhere, or if they did they would reflect back to the component.
For me, the transmission of vibrations is key and I believe that a ball-bearing provides a good path for the vibrations.

I used the steel sheet to strengthen the 2-layer plywood interior shelf and to provide a smooth clean interface for my use of cones or ball-bearings. I thought it was important to keep the materials hard with like surfaces at points of contact.
