What you have there is the 'classic' Philips 14 bit 4x oversampling chipset, they were very highly regarded in their time.I have a couple of players with these chips also, but as their lasers are dead i can't relive their sound...for now anyway.
To use a TDA1541 (16 bit dual DAC) would mean major changes, you'd do better building from scratch...
My advice would be to enjoy it for what it is. There used to be lots of tweaks in the Hifi mags for these chipsets, unfortunately though it was pre-internet days and i've not found any of it on the net. If you get lucky you could post a link on the asylum for us other 14bit fans.
To find data sheets for most semiconductors, just stick the type number into your usual search engine and see what comes up...
