Most speaker cables are unshielded by design. The amplified signal is large enough such that it's electromagnetic interaction with a shield is not so insignificant, unlike a line level signal.The same reasoning for distancing the cable from the carpet applies to the shield. The shield is a conductor that can hold a charge. The charge will cause EM interactions which can modulate the signal in the cable. That's not good. It means it's changing your music.
