I don't know if my system is resolving enough to pick up differences in the wood holding up cables, but I made some stands that look like 'hangman' stands. The base is a 4x6 inch piece of inch thick pine wood. Into it goes a vertical 8" long 3/4" diameter dowel. At the top is a 6" horizontal 1/4" diameter dowel. At first I hung all my cables in the air from these with string loops, but it looked messy and didn't sound much different from having the cables rest on the horizontal dowel. It's a quick afternoon project if you have the hardware. In general, tweaks often look better the less improvised they appear. Good luck.
