That's a very creative solution David.A similar method I have used to support interconnects is to get some solid porcelin or ceramic electrical insulators (1 1/2" x 3") from the electrical dept. of a hardware store. These have a groove in one end for the cable and on the other end have a built in lag screw made for screwing into a wall or pole. You can just screw these into a wooden base of your choice. I must admit the chinese tea cups sound a lot more exotic, especially if they would have some artwork on them.
