I'd start with playing around with how the speakers are arranged within the room, then add acoustic treatments. Do a search in here for Jon Risch Bass Traps, and you'll come up with some nifty and helpful devices. Reading through those posts will also help you learn what you can do apart from them with acoustics.
Getting the acoustics right is the cheapest and most effective way to improve your rig.
