st! - Rewiring AC from breaker panel to outlets with a separate analog and a digital breaker and a separate run from the breaker for each piece of EQ, using 10/3G wire wired with two connections used for the hot, one for the neutral, and one for the ground, with the hots arranged across from each other, and soldered at the outlet ends. Complimented with AC cords made of the same 10/3G wire with at the plug capacitive AC filters (.68uf + .01uf Wondercaps or equivalent). This made a HUGE difference in clarity, naturalness, and dynamics with no trade-offs... like I paid 2x more for my system.2nd - Acoustical room treatments... homemade Tube Traps in corners, directly behind speakers on the wall, directly behind di-pole speakers against the speakers, at 1st reflection point on sidewalls, in rear corners, with some scattered sonex for surface treatment.
rd - Mechanical damping of components (Dynamat on the inside of my Njoe Tjoeb with Sorbothane and lead bricks on top, Navcom on my phono preamp, Sorbothane on my TT platform, heavy-duty speaker stands, light and rigid EQ stands, tube dampers, homemade VPI bricks from old transformer cores, spikes under everything, etc.).
th - Part upgrades everywhere... Wondercaps (or similar), Black Gates, soft-recovery diodes, Resista/Holco/Vishay/Caddock R's, good connectors, good op-amps (especially in regulators), selected silicone (different manufacturer's silicone sounds different!), selected tubes (got to listen to them, not all NOS tubes are upgrades!). Do this everywhere, especially in power supplies!
th - Rabidly eliminate anything that's not needed... hard-wire when you can get away with it, both inside components and between them, eliminate stages not needed, move interconnects from one source to another instead of using a selector switch, position components for shortest interconnect/speaker cable paths, unplug things not needed (like the headphone jack in your CDP).
Do I sound like a mad tweaker or what?
