Tweaks under $500The following tweaks all resulted in significant improvement to the quality of sound without breaking the bank.
First – Replace Stock Vacuum Tubes. Follow “Joe’s Tube Lore†in FAQ for selecting replacements.
Second – Replace the Power Cords. I made a DIY shielded power cord from Beldon 83802 cable as listing in www.venhaus1.com for under $20. (Buy the commercial plugs from Home Depot.) The result was surprising - a smoother base and a better defined lower mid-range.
Third – ‘Sand-Bag’ the Master Timing Crystal in the CD. This is a tweak posted by Jon M. Risch, and resulted in lowering the sound threshold of my CD player. More signal was being picked up on the play back resulting in better definition and imaging to the sound. It also rounded out some of the digital harshness - an interesting tweak for little money.
