Check out Jon Risch's web site (there is a link to it in he Asylum FAQ's). He has lots and lots of great info about DIY acoustic treatments.The foam you're looking at is not likely dense enough to be effective when compared to any of the Risch designs. It would, however, be better than a bare wall in most cases (unless you ask a fire marshall - always consider fire safety when treating your room).
