For a long time, I used 2 ft. x 6 ft. x 4 in. thick foam (flat, not eggcrate texture) behind my Magnepans. It was certainly much better than a bare wall, and I imagine the eggcrate foam would be better than the flat foam. I found, however, that it's risky to simply prop the foam against the wall since it can slump forward unpredictably(possibly against equipment). I then adhered two thin, 2 in. wide wood slats to the back of each foam pad using carpet tape, but discovered that over time the slats could slowly peel away from the foam, which again made me nervous about the foam falling forward. So I would suggest that you secure the foam well to a rigid backing panel (plenty of carpet tape, or maybe there's a better way).I recently replaced the foam slabs with Echo Buster panels. They look much nicer and work better even though they are half as thick as the foam they replaced, and they will not flop forward. They are, however, MUCH more expensive than plain foam.
