Yes.The more (up to aboput 6-8 inches) the better. FOr even better results, place some fiberrglass behind it, or if the thought of iitchy fiberglass bothers you, use polyester batting insterad, or use the batting to contain the fiberglass. Adding even just a 3 1/2" thickness of fiberglass will lower the LF cutoff of the absorption down to over four times lower than just the foam alone. Just the foam starts to stop absorbing below about 1 kHz or so.
If you use an absoerber that is not full band, or nearly so, the net result is often a dark sound to the room, with the bass seeming to be overly boomy and too strong, because it did not get absorbed along with the higher frequencies.
