Ceiling tiles do some good, but they can differ a great deal in how much they will absorb. Those RATED for use as sound absorbing tiles WILL be better than a plain ceiling.The very best acoustic absorbing ceiling tiles ware about half as effective as fiberglass.
However, if you treat the whole ceiling, then it will just make the room seem duller yet, and may not tame the boom much. If you spot treat, then they may do some overall good, just not as much as fiberglass or foam od equalk thickness.
