I determined it by trial and error for my DIY traps. The two different sized discs on my DIY bass trap design provide the spacing between the inner and the outer layer of wire animal fence, so the spacing between these discs determine the compression ratio for a given thickness of fiberglass.
The inner middle disc is there to support the inner wire fencing from collapsing.
In my design, the original recipe called for the fiberglass to be compressed from approx. 6 or 6 1/2" down to 1 3/4" to 2". I now recommend the higher compression, using 6 1/2" nominal fiberglass down to 1 3/4".
