The pipes are suppossed to be open (with some acoustic sstuffing inside) so that they can act as Helmholtz resonators for the floor to ceiling mode. However, the absorbing action is small, and if you wanted to seal off the pipes, this would be OK. However, you must seal off both ends, or a harmful resonance will develop.See DIY Room Lens clone (last half of page):
