Resistive bass traps, ala ASC and the DIY bass traps I post about, work on the principle of using acoustic resistance. The outer layer of material, in the case of the DIY traps, the fiberglass compressed between the animal fencing, is used to react with the air cavity as the acoustic equivalent of an electrical RC damping network. Make the cavity bigger, and the network damps to a lower frequency. The Super Quick & Dirty version works on a principle of brute force, where there is just a lot of absorbing material, and it is mildly compressed while still in the bag.
