Egg crate foam, as typically available for bedding, is not very good acoustically, as it tends to reflect some of the HF's, and does not absorb the bass as well as foam designed for acoustic purposes. There is a reason that the Sonex, etc. foam costs so much: it is usually flame retardant, and the foam has been designed for acoustic absorption, rather than a set amount of compression as in bedding use. While you may get some results with this type of foam, keep in mind that a DIY fiberglass panel will work much better, with a more even absorption across the audio band, and it will provide a more balanced predictable effect.
For TV absorbing use, probably OK, but I would recommend more linear absorbers on the walls, etc. where a more significant area is to be treated. Other wise, you could end up with midrange colorations. Yes, it superfically sounds better at first, but with a skewed tonal balance, it could end up causing poor decisions in components later on when upgrading due to the tonal skew.
