The spacing Jon Risch suggested is as follows:For the left pair of tubes in a set - 1" at the top tapering to 7/8" at the bottom;
For the right pair of tubes in the set - 3/4" at the top tapering to a little over 5/8" at the bottom.That means the 2 gaps aren't the same size and the taper is less than indicated in your post - you're using the top measurement of the wider gap with the botto measurement of the narrower gap.
Somewhere I seem to remember reading a comment that the screen at the bottom slows the exit wave slightly and that this assists in the efficiency of the helmholtz resonater function. I used the toe section of some "sock" type pantyhose since the toes are stronger than the rest of the pantyhose.
