By my understanding, I think you've got it right on both counts.
I wouldn't get too obsessive about the mesh and stuffing (though I followed John's note on both of these), I think the major effect of the lenses is their diffraction properties.
You can check out a picture of my lenses, in room, on my web page. I used two layers of 18mm MDF for the bases, and a single piece to locate the pipes at the top.
