individual 12"x12" samples of marble and granite for "ringing."
Hold them up by one corner and strike them with a plastic or wooden object. Most of the marbles and some of the granites will ring like a bell, but some of the other granites should make a dullish thud. You may not get the color you like, but if you want damping, you've got to go with the dull sounding ones. The tile shop should be able to cut the 12"x12" tiles down to size for you relatively cheaply. How does your friend recommend attaching the stone slab? Thin plastic foam or blu-tac type material might work.
It's a relatively cheap tweak, so give it a try, see if you can hear any improvement and let us know. It also serves to prevent water damage to speaker finishes when someone sets a drink on them!!!
