[ Yes, they are the 2" thick pannels. What benifit does doubling up provide? Or more importantly, what is detrimental about single layers. ]With only 2" thickness, the LF absorption will be quite poor, they will stop absorbing below about 500 Hz.
[ When doubling up should the pannels be placed flat side to flat side with the textured surfaces facing outward? ]
If you space them from the walls, ti doesn't matter, but if you use the convolutions to help space against the wall, then it would matter.
[ If the pannels are positioned in the places we are discussing will there be more benifit if the pannels are placed aginst the wall or should there be a gap of say a few inches between the wall and back of pannels? ]
Most of the specs you see are derived with 2" or more of spacing. Flush against the wall, and the LF absorption suffers even more.
[ Additionally, the texture surface of the pannels looks symetrical so why the reference to horizontal placement as opposed to vertical? ]
This is in reference to using TWO doubled up panels at weach mentioned location, and rather than placing the two panbels one above the other, place them one next ot the side fo the other.
[ Lastly, would corner placement be more appropriate than locations behind the listening position and between the spakers? ]
One can always experiment, but the placements I call out in my DIY note are usually going to provide the best results.
