You don't say how thick they are, but I am guessing the 2" variety.The first thing you should do if they are only 2" or 3" thick, is DOUBLE UP THE THICKNESS. This will avoid the usual acoustic treatment boo-boo of "too much of too thin".
This leaves you 8 "panels" to play with, and yes, try the spots you mention, and try placing the 2 "panels" at easch location side by side first, that is two on a horizontal line, rather than vertically.
I would try the side walls first though.
